The Susquehanna Chorale seeks to develop and promote public appreciation for
the highest artistic levels of the choral art, to be achieved by:
- Presenting concerts of the highest artistic standards.
- Educating youth, audiences, and members in choral repertoire of all
periods suited to chamber choir.
- Providing opportunities for area singers to work together on a high
artistic level in rehearsals and performances.
- Making the Susquehanna Chorale known to the the general public.
The Susquehanna Chorale was founded in 1981 by Artistic Director Linda L.
Tedford, and has emerged as one of this country’s outstanding choral
ensembles. The 36-voice chamber choir is recognized by critics and audiences
alike for its commitment to excellence and for its artistic interpretation of
choral works of many styles and historical periods. Reflecting its dedication to
the music of our time, the group has commissioned several new works and
performed the East Coast premieres of many outstanding works. Past seasons have
included performances at the Washington National Cathedral, conventions of the
American Choral Directors Association, and at the House of Representatives at
the State Capitol, as well as frequent performances with the Harrisburg
Symphony Orchestra. In 1997, the group made its first
international tour, performing in various venues throughout Great Britain,
including the Albert Halls in Scotland, the Durham and Coventry Cathedrals, and
the Leonard Stanley Music Festival in England. The Susquehanna Chorale was the
1994 recipient of Chorus America’s highest national award: The Margaret Hillis
Achievement Award for Choral Excellence. The group’s three CDs have also
received national recognition.
As further evidence of its mission to promote the choral art, the Chorale
co-sponsored the Central PA Choral Festival for 17 years, bringing
internationally known conductors to Central Pennsylvania. The group is also
renowned for its educational outreach programs, the Susquehanna Youth Chorale
and the Susquehanna Children's Chorale for area students between grades 4 and
the first year of college. Also included is a conducting internship for area
college students.
In 2009, the Chorale became Artists-in-Residence at Messiah College in
Grantham, PA.
